AMNESTY: Top 10 Words of 2008

Here are just a few wins you can take credit for:

1. 1.5 million letters: online and hand written letters delivered to governments worldwide and Congress here at home.

2. 116 people protected from persecution and danger: from China to Turkey to Myanmar (Burma) to the United States, your letters worked! And helped free innocent human rights activists and political prisoners.

3. Death penalty executions averted: 18 stays or commutations worldwide (8 in the U.S., 2 in Texas). And tens of thousands of letters and numerous vigils for Troy Davis mean he’s still alive today, fighting for justice in the state of Georgia.

4. 500+ groups or individuals met face to face with lawmakers: Amnesty International supporters met with their Members of Congress on Darfur, Guantánamo and violence against women.
5. Guantánamo Bay replica cell tours the U.S.: Amnesty brought a two-ton, bright orange replica of a Guantánamo Bay cell to 11 cities, including both national political conventions. More than 12,000 people toured the cell, and 10-15 million either read about it in their local or national newspaper or saw the cell on TV.

6. President-elect promises to close Guantánamo: since it opened, Amnesty has been on the frontlines pushing for its closure. This past year’s heightened campaigning helped support President-elect Obama’s decision to close Guantánamo.

7. Local groups make a big impact: Group #133 mobilized its annual "Get on the Bus" event. More than 1,200 activists traveled to Manhattan for a day of demonstrations at the U.N. missions of Sudan, Sri Lanka, Libya, Myanmar and India.

8. Pretty Bird Woman House: secures a shelter house in March 2008. We wrote letters to the town of McLaughlin, SD urging their assistance in opening the shelter. This follows the original hard-hitting research Amnesty conducted last year on violence against Native American and Alaska Native women.

9. Universal Declaration of Human Rights: for its 60th anniversary, Amnesty releases several videos online, including an exclusive music video track available on iTunes. Total viewership worldwide reached over 500,000.

10. Progress made on legislation: your in-person visits, together with all your letters, petitions and online actions meant that our Government Relations team had the backup and grassroots support needed to secure some important legislative victories:
  • Growing number of Republicans and Democrats co-sponsored the International Violence Against Women Act
  • Millions of dollars set aside for peacekeeping and humanitarian aid in Darfur.
  • Habeas corpus gains affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court survived proposed rollbacks in Congress.
  • Senate passed a resolution calling on the United Nations to stop the flow of weapons into Darfur by expanding the current arms embargo to all of Sudan.
  • Progress made to include funding to stop violence against Native American and Alaska Native women in the 2009 appropriations bill
  • Funding package to Mexico included important human rights safeguards

No Pets for Christmas!

Questions to Ask
Before Buying a Pet as a Christmas Gift

· Will other people be living with the recipient? When I was a child one of my aunts surprised, me with a chocolate spotted mongrel I named "Peanuts." Only I wasn't the only one surprised. My parents, who got off on the wrong foot with Peanuts from the first day, started wondering how they could keep my new dog without losing their sanity. After a few months of watching Peanuts tear clothes off the clothesline, chew newspapers, and ruin our carpets, they secretly got rid of him, telling me Peanuts ran off to the "deep dark woods." In other words, make sure everyone else who lives with the new pet is agreeable to the adoption and is ready to share responsibility for the care of the animal.

· It's important to make sure no one living with the pet suffers from allergies.

· Is the recipient's family financially stable? If your recipent is a child, determine if the recipient's parents are financially able to feed and care for the pet. You may have a beloved grandchild who's both highlighted and underlined a dog or a cat on his (or her) Christmas list, but if the child's family isn't able to either to either feed or pay a veterinarian for the needed shots and other medical emergencies, you're only adding a financial burden to the family.

· Does the family travel a lot? If the recipient and his family frequently aren't home, chances are a pet will be a problem.

So Today is World AIDS Day, so you should visit this website for a bit and look around :)
The good news is there are many new developments in the fight against AIDS and just the other day I read an article about an HIV vaccine in 4 years!
That's pretty Awesome!

The best news is that now with a little hope and a light at the end of the tunnel, talking about HIV and AIDS will become less taboo and instead we can focus on it as a real issue. So read, talk, and don't forget there are millions and millions and millions of people on earth being affect by this horrible disease. Happy World AIDS Day.

Seventh Generation!!!

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Never Buying Anything
Bad For The Earth Ever Again!! (p.s. there are tons of companies out there now that are non-harmful to our environment and earth. Seventh Generation is the top of the pops now, but some are a bit cheaper if you have a budget).

Now the best part is that it is SO Easy to get! Your blog task it to click the two following picture links and check out where you can get these products. I think Wal-Mart has them too, but Wal-Mart is kinda against everything this blog stands for and squishes all the little companies that make things like Seventh Generation happen in the first place. Amazon even sells it! Shipping is bad bad for the enviro, but if you buy a lot in bulk it is okay :) For example, you can order 6 laundry detergents for only $32 on Amazon, CRAZY! So, hey, you could order all you Seventh Generation products for six months and only shop twice a year!!! Anyway, please click, read up, and no more Tide! What is your Carbon Footprint???

What is Your Carbon Footprint???
Here is a really interesting website where you can calculate your carbon footprint. You may have done it before, but try it again and look closely at what the things are that are increasing your footprint. Things like your car are an obvious one. But things like buying locally are much more important than you'd believe. Don't worry too too much if you don't get your "house" calculations accurate.

Try entering in your calculations as they were 3 years ago. It's crazy and really optimistically inspiring :) Once you have your Carbon footprint number, write it down and also write down one or two things you can work on to lower it closer to the ideal world target :)

Here is my footprint. I really need to ditch the car. Anyway Have Fun!!!! :)

November: Save This Animal!

Hello, my followers! Thank you for visiting once again. I updated something really cool and awesome this month. It is called "Save This Animal!" Section. I am going to add loving animals that are endangered every month and talk about them. How cute is that? Also I am going to add a link that can save these animals from being endangered! Sweet! So let's start!

November 2008
Endangered Animal: Chinchillas
By Danny Kim

Chinchillas are the cutest thing you'll ever see in your life. Seriously. I mean, just look at them!I If you don't think they are cute, then something is wrong with you! How adorable can they be, seriously? But you know what? People make FUR COATS out of these cutest things in the entire world. How sad. :( People (we) kill them and make soft and fuzzy warm winter coats! What we need to do is how to figure things out and save this cutest creature in South America!!!!! Here are some facts about Chinchillas!

-Size: Small and Squirrel-like (adorable)
-Color: Gray with mix of white
-Description: Large Ears and Bushy Tails (aww! :))
-Fun Facts:
-Chinchillas are nocturnal.
-Chinchillas have more than 50 hairs from a single follicle. (so they are very soft)
-Humans have one hair from each follicle.
-Chinchillas grow in South America, especially in Chili. (yummy!)
-ALSO if you are allergic to dogs, cats, horses, snakes, scorpions, etc, then don't you ever worry!! because Chinchillas are animal friendly! And they are allergen-free.

Why do we need to save this animal?
HELLO! People make fur coats out of Chinchillas! How Cruella de Vil of them! Anyways, you can check out this website called Wild Chinchillas and they will tell you everything and more about this cute creature. Their goal is to help these chinchillas from being extinct. They ask for donations and volunteer workers. Cool website just to check it out.

We all know that many MANY celebrities wear fur coats and buy crocodile handbags. Yes, they are evil and you should never love any of them. I picked out a famous celebrity who was photographed wearing A CHINCHILLA FUR COAT! UGH! SHAME ON YOU! So now I am going to arrest her. I am a FASHION POLICE! FASHION POLICE FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY!

Madonna

Here's a sad woman for you all. I mean, the woman is going through divorce! No wonder her husband left her. BECAUSE SHE KEEPS BUYING FUR COATS. Madonna does good things for the world; she goes to Africa and feed children who are dying. But look how hideous she looks in this picture? The woman is getting old and she needs to stop trying so hard to look young. Wearing fur makes her look ugly. If she loves her African babies so much then why can't she save her money and love little cute chinchillas? How thoughtless of her. She's done in my book. Fashion Police is on their way!! wee-young-wee-young-wee-young-wee-young!

BYE EVERYONE! Have a wonderful day, night, afternoon, whatever.

FOR YOU TO PRINT: Animal Testing Info

Okay :) So I am uploading 2 things:
1) A white copy of the BAD products so print off please, put it up, advertise it wherever you can (send one to your mom or dad or grandma or siblings :) )
2) A sheet with smaller versions. Print it 8.5 x 11 (normal size paper) and cut it out so you can take it everywhere with you :)

What is most important is to just check the back of every product and make sure they don't have companies like "Proctor & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive, Church & Dwight or Johnson & Johnson. Believe it or not there really are products out there you can buy: like Aquafresh and Tums are made by GlaxoSmithKline........ACT Mouthwash is made by Chattem. Both of these companies are OK :) So just check the back and please save these two files (the images) and print them off! :)
